Piget · The Rise and Fall of a Ghost
God Was Always by Your Side
A memorial for my best friend, who chose to tragically die alone. Even in the deepest anguish of depression, God is always beside you on the cross, sharing your pain.

[Verse 1]
If the stars fall down on you
And the sun refuse to shine
The weight of sorrows welds the chains,
And leaves no meaning in the rhyme.
If the skies turn into stone
Does it matter much at all?
For Heaven feels so far away
And no one catches when you fall.
[Bridge 1]
When the darkness closes you in,
See the reasons that never heal.
The beliefs that bend and break,
All they leave is empty space.
[Chorus 1]
He was always by your side,
God was always by your side.
When you gave up the fight,
God was always by your side.
[Verse 2]
Let the tears of silence flow,
For the things we’ll never know.
Love’s face is hidden, still and cold,
No comfort found, no hand to hold.
Your prophets said you had no friends,
So do not share your gloominess.
Didn't want to appear so weak
This is the reason that made you sick.
[Solo]
[Verse 3]
D'you know he shared the worst of fates?
The humble, the renegade, the slain.
When you thought to be alone,
He was there next to your cross.
And the night you stopped to cry,
He was always by your side.
When you gave up the fight,
God was always by your side.
[Chorus 3]
He was always by your side,
God was always by your side.
When you gave up the fight,
God was always by your side.

Among the tabs left open in his browser, the night my best friend decided to commit suicide from the bridge, there was a video by a YouTuber with Middle Eastern features, who said that everyone only acts for their own interests and therefore no one really has friends. "Friends are just groups of people who share interests." This is why everyone is truly alone.
On the internet, you mostly find confirmation of your own research. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, is more likely to raise objections than mere individual research guided by one's own beliefs.
This song is about depression. No one truly knows what it is unless they experience it firsthand.
It's a reinterpretation of the Motörhead song, "God Was Never on Your Side."
I think that in suffering we can participate more authentically in the solitude of God, raised on the cross by his own will: to be close to the humblest of human beings.
As if to say, "Do you feel humiliated? Look at me, I am God, and I have decided to embody your suffering, to show you that I too share it."
It's a very sad lament from a female voice, which I imagine my friend would have needed to console his sadness, which explains the reasons for his tragic choice. Those reasons that we, his friends, have tried to explain and seek.
It reminds me of when he and I discussed the meaning of life late at night in the car. He argued that it was an oxymoron, because life has no meaning: the only reason to live is to enjoy it as much as possible.
This philosophy of his, which I couldn't dialectically challenge at the time, I unfortunately believe was the cause that led to his final decision. At the height of his health and well-being, a girl's rejection triggered a spiral of obsessive thoughts, culminating in the conclusion that if you can't get better before you start aging in your thirties, there's no reason left to live.
Today, sadness and the divine are shunned by society, and it remains a serious problem that schools don't address such a fundamental topic as depression and other feelings, so that they can be prepared to recognize it. To know that if a depressed boy says, "Don't worry, I'm fine, I want to be alone," the last thing you should do is leave him alone.
Perhaps if he had believed he had a purpose in life, he would have continued to fight for it.
I believe that if you love, you want above all to be loved, but to be loved, you must leave others free to love. If we were puppets in God's hands, we wouldn't be free to love Him, and therefore we couldn't truly love Him.
This is why I believe we are all free: free to seek God and to love Him.
God was close to you on your cross. And I hope you can be close to him now.

[Strofa 1]
Se le stelle ti cadono addosso
E il sole si rifiuta di splendere
Il peso del dolore salda le catene,
E non lascia alcun significato alla rima.
Se il cielo si trasforma in pietra
Ha davvero importanza?
Perché il Paradiso sembra così lontano
E nessuno ti afferra quando cadi.
[Ponte 1]

Come a dire "Ti senti umiliato?
